Traditional Saddle Stitched Leather

Date: Saturday, July 15, 2:00-5:00 pm

Cost: $65

Sew your own leather wallet, your choice of two styles. In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the craft of hand sewing vegetable tanned leather with a traditional two-needle saddle stitch and waxed linen thread. We will touch on leather selection, sewing technique, tools, pattern making, wet-molding, and finishes. No prior sewing experience is necessary, but this class will require good hand dexterity. Bring your reading glasses if you need them! Other supplies provided. Class size 6-8. Ages 14 and up.

About the Instructor:

Beth Dow is a Minneapolis-based artist and educator. When not working with cameras and computers she keeps her hands busy with leatherwork and woodcarving. She teaches wood and leather craft at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, the American Swedish Institute, and the St Olaf Folk School.

Making Small Books from Paper, Plants, & Found Materials

Date: Saturday, August 19, 1:00-4:00 pm
Instructor: Jennifer Schultz
Cost: $60

Learn how to reuse interesting papers from the recycling bin, like gift wrap and security envelopes, in addition to quality papers, to make interesting booklets for journaling or artist books. We will learn to use the bone folder, book binding needles and thread, etc; most techniques would be glue free. We will also learn how to use garden plants and floral waste for making eco-printed papers to use in your project. This is a 3-hour workshop and everyone will take home one finished book. Class size of 5-10. Teens welcome.
